About Swiss National Day

Every year, the Swiss community at home and abroad celebrates our country's national holiday, which falls on 1 August.

1st August marks the date in the year 1291 when representatives from Switzerland's three founding cantons, Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden formed the alliance around which today's modern, vibrant and creative nation came to be built over the next 500 years.

Fun fact: The nation's newest canton, Jura, was admitted into the Confederation in 1979 following a national vote - splitting it from neighbouring Bern

The day is typically celebrated within the communities with specially prepared food, choral music, fireworks and lighted paper lanterns.

Here in London the Swiss National Day organising committee is a team of dedicated volunteers with links to Switzerland wanting to put together an unforgettable event for our community!

Many hours went into the organisation of this community event. Thank you for supporting us!
